Reporting Abuse Neglect

Nursing homes are accountable for the care of their residents. If you suspect that a loved one in nursing home care is the victim of abuse or neglect, don’t hesitate to report your suspicions of these activities. Ohio law protects seniors from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

An estimated 2.1 million seniors are victims of some form of abuse each year in the United States alone. What’s even more shocking is that many more cases of nursing home abuse and neglect go unreported. Understaffed and poorly operated nursing homes cause injury and death to many elderly residents.

At Jones Law Group, we believe that it is the responsibility of legal professionals to seek justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Our nursing home abuse and neglect attorneys stand up to nursing homes that violate residents’ rights. A nursing home may be held responsible for its negligence in hiring, training, and supervising employees as well as for the acts of its employees.

How to Report Nursing Home Abuse & Neglect

Any suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, whether against a loved one or another resident, should be reported to the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Attorney General’s Patient Abuse or Neglect system, or your local Ombudsman office. Be prepared to provide specific information, such as the name of the victim, the name of the facility and location, the date and time of the incident, and the names of any witnesses.

If you see an elder being abused, don’t hesitate to report it. Don’t assume that someone else is going to resolve the situation. Many seniors don’t report nursing home abuse because they fear retaliation from the abuser. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or the local police for help. If you have been the victim of abuse, neglect, or exploitation, tell a doctor, friend, or family member that you can trust.
