The State Medical Board of Ohio has issued draft Rule 4731-11-12, which establishes treatment parameters for prescribes who treat opiate addiction with office-based treatment buprenorphine products, including Suboxone. The Board indicates the need for regulation is urgent, as such products are being diverted at alarming levels. Law enforcement officials also report that some prescribers are setting up “pill mills” similar to the ones that were used for prescribing opiates. Due to the initial volume of comments filed about the draft rules, the Board is convening a panel, July 23, of interested parties for a face-to-face discussion.
