One of the first questions many clients have when hiring an attorney is simple: “How much is this going to cost?”
At Jones Law Group, LLC, we believe clients should have as much certainty as possible about the cost of their legal representation. That is why flat-fee pricing is available for many of the matters we handle, particularly professional-license investigations and disciplinary matters.
Rather than billing for every phone call, email, meeting, or hour working on a case, a flat fee establishes the legal fee for an agreed-upon scope of representation in advance.
Traditional hourly billing can create uncertainty. A client may know an attorney’s hourly rate but have little idea what the case will ultimately cost.
A $400 or $500 hourly rate does not tell you very much if you do not know whether the attorney will spend 10 hours, 30 hours, or 100 hours on the matter.
With an agreed flat fee, the client knows the cost for the defined scope of representation at the beginning of the case.
We believe that has several important advantages.
Perhaps the greatest advantage is predictability.
When a flat fee covers a defined stage or scope of representation, the client does not have to wonder how much each telephone call, email, conference, or document review is adding to the legal bill.
That can be particularly important for doctors, nurses, dentists, therapists, and other professionals facing a licensing investigation. There is already enough uncertainty surrounding an investigation without also wondering what the next legal bill will be.
Hourly billing can create an unfortunate incentive: clients may hesitate to contact their lawyer because they are worried about being charged for the conversation.
We do not want that.
In a professional-license case, a seemingly minor development can be important. An investigator may call. An employer may request a meeting. A hospital may send a credentialing question. A client may receive an unexpected email from the Board.
We want our clients to contact us when something happens—not hesitate because they are wondering whether a ten-minute telephone conversation will appear on their next bill.
When the communication falls within the agreed scope of a flat-fee representation, the client can focus on getting legal advice rather than watching the clock.
Hourly billing necessarily ties the attorney’s compensation to the amount of time spent on the case.
Flat-fee billing changes that dynamic.
The objective becomes resolving the matter effectively and efficiently, rather than generating additional billable hours. If an experienced attorney can identify the issue quickly, make the right argument, and resolve a matter without unnecessary work, the client benefits from that experience rather than receiving a larger bill.
At Jones Law Group, we believe clients are hiring us for our judgment, experience, strategy, and results—not simply for our time.
Jones Law Group has represented licensed professionals for over 19 years.
Experience can allow an attorney to recognize issues more quickly, understand how a licensing board is likely to approach a matter, identify what information is important, and avoid spending time pursuing issues that are unlikely to affect the outcome.
Under hourly billing, greater efficiency can paradoxically mean that an experienced attorney bills fewer hours for accomplishing the same task.
Flat-fee pricing allows the value of experience to be reflected differently. The client pays an agreed amount for a defined service rather than purchasing the attorney’s time in six-minute increments.
Professional licensing cases do not always proceed on a predictable schedule. A quiet month may be followed by an investigative interview, settlement discussions, or significant correspondence from the Board.
With hourly billing, that can result in substantial fluctuations in monthly legal bills.
Where a flat fee is appropriate, the financial arrangement is established in advance. The client knows what the agreed representation costs and can plan accordingly.
Many of the matters handled by Jones Law Group involve physicians, nurses, dentists, therapists, and other licensed professionals dealing with licensing boards and regulatory agencies.
These cases often involve identifiable stages, such as responding to an investigation, preparing for an investigative interview, negotiating a proposed consent agreement, or defending formal disciplinary proceedings. Jones Law Group knows each stage of the process well and can predict fairly accurately how much time each stage may take, and let you know what to expect.
That can make flat-fee arrangements particularly useful.
Depending upon the matter, Jones Law Group may be able to establish a flat fee for a defined stage of representation so that the client understands both what services are included and what those services will cost before proceeding.
No. Every legal matter is different, and flat-fee pricing is not appropriate for every case.
The nature and complexity of the matter, the anticipated scope of representation, whether litigation or an administrative hearing is involved, and other circumstances can affect the appropriate fee arrangement.
But flat-fee pricing is often available, and we are happy to discuss whether it makes sense for your particular matter.
Before representation begins, we want our clients to understand the scope of the representation and how the legal fee will be calculated.
When your professional license, career, or livelihood is at stake, you should be able to communicate with your attorney without wondering what every telephone call or email is costing you.
At Jones Law Group, we believe flat fees can provide clients with greater certainty, encourage open communication, and better align the attorney’s incentives with the client’s goal: handling the matter as effectively and efficiently as possible.
If you are facing a professional-license investigation, disciplinary proceeding, credentialing matter, or other professional regulatory issue, contact Jones Law Group to discuss your case and whether flat-fee representation is available for your matter.
