What are my chances of getting approved for Social Security Disability benefits?

As of January 2022, the approval rates for Social Security Disability claims can vary depending on various factors such as the nature of the disability, the strength of the evidence provided, and the jurisdiction. However, generally speaking, the approval rates for initial applications are typically lower compared to approval rates after a hearing.

  1. Initial Application Approval Rate: On average, around 30% to 35% of Social Security Disability claims are approved at the initial application stage. This means that a significant majority of initial applications are denied upon first review by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

  1. Approval Rate After a Hearing: The approval rates tend to increase significantly for applicants who pursue their cases through the appeals process and have a hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ). At this stage, approximately 45% to 50% of claims are approved. This suggests that a considerable number of initially denied applicants are successful in obtaining benefits after presenting their case at a hearing.
